Why does schema type matter?

Schema markup is structured data you add to a page so search engines and AI answer engines can understand what kind of content it contains — without having to read every word. The three types most relevant to blog content are FAQ, HowTo, and Article.

Choosing the wrong schema type is not catastrophic, but choosing the right one gives AI engines a cleaner signal about how to parse and cite your content. A post structured as a step-by-step guide should tell AI engines it is a HowTo. A post full of Q&A sections should declare itself an FAQ. What is FAQ schema?

Use FAQ schema when:

FAQ schema appears in Google AI Overviews and has historically triggered rich results in Google Search. It is one of the highest-leverage schema types for AI citability.

What is HowTo schema?

HowTo schema is structured data that describes a step-by-step process. It includes a name for the process, an optional description, and a list of named steps — each with its own title and instructions.

Use HowTo schema when:

• Your post title starts with "How to…"
• Your content walks through a sequence of steps in order
• Completing the steps leads to a defined outcome

Example: "How to start a morning routine" — HowTo. "How to set up Google Search Console for WordPress" — HowTo. "How to reduce your recovery time after a marathon" — HowTo.

HowTo schema should not be used for conceptual explainers or opinion pieces, even if they contain some instructional content. If there is no clear sequence of steps, use Article or FAQ instead.

What is Article schema?

Article schema is the default for general blog content. It communicates the headline, author, and publication date to search engines and AI engines — signalling that this is an authored piece of content with a clear publication timestamp.

Use Article schema when:

• Your post does not fit the FAQ or HowTo pattern
• Your content is an opinion piece, analysis, roundup, or news post
• You want to signal authorship and freshness without claiming a specific content structure

Example: "The state of AI search in 2026" — Article. "10 WordPress plugins every blogger needs" — Article. "Why your traffic dropped after Google's March update" — Article.

Article schema is the safest default. If you are unsure, use Article.

How do you choose? The simple rule

Can you use more than one schema type on the same page?

Technically yes — you can stack multiple schema types on a single page. But in practice, pick the one that best describes the primary structure of your content. Mixing schema types on a simple blog post adds complexity without meaningful benefit.

The exception: if your post is primarily a HowTo guide but has a FAQ section at the bottom, you can add both. AI engines will use whichever is most relevant for a given query.
