FAQ vs HowTo vs Article Schema: Which One Should You Use?

Most WordPress users have no idea which schema type to add to their posts. Here's the simple rule for choosing between FAQ, HowTo, and Article schema — and why it matters for AI search.

Why does schema type matter?

Schema markup is structured data you add to a page so search engines and AI answer engines can understand what kind of content it contains — without having to read every word. The three types most relevant to blog content are FAQ, HowTo, and Article.

Choosing the wrong schema type is not catastrophic, but choosing the right one gives AI engines a cleaner signal about how to parse and cite your content. A post structured as a step-by-step guide should tell AI engines it is a HowTo. A post full of Q&A sections should declare itself an FAQ. Getting this right increases the likelihood that your content is extracted correctly.

What is FAQ schema?

FAQ schema is structured data that lists a set of questions and their corresponding answers. AI engines parse it directly — they do not need to read your page copy to understand what questions you answer and what your answers say.

Use FAQ schema when:

  • Your post answers multiple distinct questions (a Q&A format)
  • Your headings are phrased as questions ("What is X?", "How does Y work?")
  • Your content has a natural question-and-answer flow rather than a linear narrative

Example: "What is regenerative travel?" — FAQ. "Frequently asked questions about WordPress plugins" — FAQ. "What is the difference between AEO and SEO?" — FAQ.

FAQ schema appears in Google AI Overviews and has historically triggered rich results in Google Search. It is one of the highest-leverage schema types for AI citability.

What is HowTo schema?

HowTo schema is structured data that describes a step-by-step process. It includes a name for the process, an optional description, and a list of named steps — each with its own title and instructions.

Use HowTo schema when:

  • Your post title starts with "How to…"
  • Your content walks through a sequence of steps in order
  • Completing the steps leads to a defined outcome

Example: "How to start a morning routine" — HowTo. "How to set up Google Search Console for WordPress" — HowTo. "How to reduce your recovery time after a marathon" — HowTo.

HowTo schema should not be used for conceptual explainers or opinion pieces, even if they contain some instructional content. If there is no clear sequence of steps, use Article or FAQ instead.

What is Article schema?

Article schema is the default for general blog content. It communicates the headline, author, and publication date to search engines and AI engines — signalling that this is an authored piece of content with a clear publication timestamp.

Use Article schema when:

  • Your post does not fit the FAQ or HowTo pattern
  • Your content is an opinion piece, analysis, roundup, or news post
  • You want to signal authorship and freshness without claiming a specific content structure

Example: "The state of AI search in 2026" — Article. "10 WordPress plugins every blogger needs" — Article. "Why your traffic dropped after Google's March update" — Article.

Article schema is the safest default. If you are unsure, use Article.

How do you choose? The simple rule

| Post type | Schema to use | |-----------|--------------| | Title starts with "How to…" | HowTo | | Post is structured as Q&A | FAQ | | Post has a Q&A section at the bottom | FAQ | | Everything else | Article |

When in doubt: if your post has question-format headings throughout, use FAQ. If it is a sequential guide with a defined outcome, use HowTo. For everything else, Article.

Can you use more than one schema type on the same page?

Technically yes — you can stack multiple schema types on a single page. But in practice, pick the one that best describes the primary structure of your content. Mixing schema types on a simple blog post adds complexity without meaningful benefit.

The exception: if your post is primarily a HowTo guide but has a FAQ section at the bottom, you can add both. AI engines will use whichever is most relevant for a given query.

Why most WordPress users skip schema entirely

Schema markup has a reputation for being technical. The traditional approach requires writing JSON-LD by hand, understanding the spec, and making sure the output validates — most content creators skip it entirely.

That is a missed opportunity. FAQ and HowTo schema are among the most direct signals you can give an AI engine. They are not just for Google rich results anymore. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews all parse structured data when deciding which content to cite.

The fix is making schema easy to add without writing code. Visibly AI includes a guided schema wizard in the Gutenberg sidebar — select FAQ, HowTo, or Article from a dropdown, fill in your questions and answers or steps, and the plugin generates and injects the correct JSON-LD automatically. Pro users can generate the schema from their post content with one click.

You can install it free from the WordPress plugin directory.

Summary

Use FAQ schema when your post answers multiple questions in a Q&A structure. Use HowTo schema when your post walks through a sequence of steps toward a defined outcome. Use Article schema for everything else — opinion, analysis, roundups, and news.

The right schema type tells AI engines exactly how to parse your content. Combined with question-format headings and short direct answers, it is one of the fastest ways to improve your content's AI citability.
